This section explains the major features of a domain name account and the things you need to be aware of with regard to their function and use. It is not necessary for you to understand in great technical detail everything there is to know about domain names, but the features described below are the ones you will encounter during the registration process, and the ones most likely to cause you trouble if they are not handled appropriately. Registrar
This is the company that the domain was purchased from. Top level registrars include Network Solutions, DirectI, etc. Many smaller companies also function as registrars by reselling domains from the top level domain providers. dotWeavers.com resells domains from DirectI who is a ICANN registrar, since they sell domains to resellers only. The registrar is also the company you pay to renew your domain name when the registration period is up. Domain names can be transferred from one registrar to another following specific rules. There are a number of domain registration scams out there which appear to be renewal notices when in fact they are registrar transfer forms. The easiest way to recognize them is to know who your registrar is and only accept renewal notices from the company you bought your domain from. WHOIS Information
This is the basic information returned by a WHOIS query on a domain name. It contains the ownership and contact information, the registration and expiration dates, and the DNS servers for the domain. This is the information you are creating when you register your domain. You can find a WHOIS query form on most domain registrar sites, and there are also many independent WHOIS servers where you can check domain information. Registrant or Owner Contact
This is the first contact you have to fill out, and arguably the most important, at least from a legal standpoint. The person or organization listed in this contact is considered to be the legal owner of the domain name. This can be a serious problem if a client asks their designer to purchase a domain on their behalf and the designer registers the domain with himself as the owner. It does happen, unfortunately far too often, and if a legal dispute arises over the ownership of the domain this can be very problematic. You should always make sure whenever someone else buys a domain for you that you are listed as the owner. If we at dotWeavers.com purchase a domain name for you, you have our guarantee that you will be the designated owner of the domain. Administrative Contact
For operational purposes, this is the single most important piece of information about your domain. Almost all of a registrar's business is done with the Administrative Contact. As you might guess, this is the person or company that has administrative rights to act on behalf of the Registrant and make changes to all aspects of the domain name, including all contacts, name servers, and sub-domains. If you lose your domain manager password, this is the person that the registrar will ask to deal with in order for you to get it back or change it. The contact information for the administrator should be kept as accurate as possible at all times, particularly the email address. The administrator's email receives all renewal notices, password reminders, and other business email from the registrar.
The number one mistake people make when registering a domain name is not keeping the administrative email address current. Many people change their email address before the registration period is up and drop the one they were using when the bought the domain. This results in failure to receive renewal notices and the inability to receive password reminders from the registrar if your password becomes lost. When that is the case, you usually have to go through a painful process involving a fax request form with a copy of a photo ID and several days of waiting to get the registrar to update your information for you. This is not fun, and if you are not patient it is not something you want to have to do. Keeping the Administrative Contact up to date is the best way to guarantee that your domain name will be quick and easy to manage whenever changes are needed.
You should always register a domain with an email address you plan to keep for a long time if at all possible. One mistake that companies often make is when an employee purchases the domain and uses his own contact information, then that employee later leaves the company, has his email address deleted, etc., and generally makes life difficult for everybody who has to manage the domain after he is gone. If you are using a company email address, it is best to use a general company address such as the one we use, domain@dotWeavers.com, or if that is unavailable, the address of a senior employee or manager who isn't planning on changing jobs anytime soon. Billing Contact
Fortunately this one is nice and obvious. This is the person to be contacted by the registrar regarding any billing matters for your domain name, including registrations and renewals. If the billing contact is different from the registrant or the administrator, those two contacts may also receive billing notices from the registrar if the billing contact can no longer be reached. Technical or Zone Contact
This contact is usually the person or organization responsible for maintaining the DNS servers that resolve the domain to a website, as well as handling other technical problems related to the domain. In most cases this will be your web host, ISP, or the registrar you bought the domain from. You always have the option to change this contact to yourself or someone else of your choice, such as the website designer. DNS or Name Servers
DNS stands for Domain Name Server (also referred to as Domain Name Service or Domain Name System). A DNS translates domain names into IP addresses. If someone wants to access dotWeavers web site (www.dotWeavers.com), the DNS translates the domain name into its corresponding IP address 70.86.149.2, allowing the computer to locate dotWeavers.com web server. The DNS for your domain will normally be provided by the company hosting your website, and you have to make sure that you have the correct DNS settings specified in your domain account in order for it to display your website properly. When you change hosts, you also change DNS servers, which is why you need to keep your domain manager login. If you can't change your domain's DNS settings, then you can't change hosts. The domain registrar can still change this information for you if you have no way to do it yourself, but as with changing contact information it involves a tedious fax verification process that you don't want to go through if it can be avoided. This information is available to the public through the WHOIS service. |
 |
What if the domain name I want to use is already taken? |
| |
You can choose an alternative domain name, or same name with different TLD/ extension, for example, if myDomain.com is not available, you can register myDomain.net if available, or wait until the current one expires (not recommended) or if you feel that you have a right to the unavailable domain name, you could follow the domain dispute policy and try to acquire that particular domain name. |

| |
The domain registration is completed as soon as we receive the completed registration form and payment. The registration process takes few minutes. A confirmation email is sent to the domain name's administrative and billing contacts with the details of the domain registration. |

| |
Once you let us know the domain name to transfer and pay the transfer fee, we will initiate the transfer process, which will send an email to the current admin contact as listed in the WHOIS. You need to approve the transfer. In the next 24-48 hours, you may receive another email from your current registrar asking you to approve the transfer. Some registrars just notify you about the transfer and do not need your approval. It may take about a week for the actual transfer to take place. When you transfer a domain, it is automatically renewed by 1 year. Note that, you will not be able to transfer a domain up to 60 days from the date of registration. Similarly, if you transfer the domain within 45 days after renewing it, your current renewal is cancelled and you will get only 1 year of renewal that you normally get from the us. If you transfer after 45 days of the renewal, you will retain that renewal that you have done and you get 1 year renewal from us as usual. Transfer and Renew your website now |
 |
How do I cancel my domain name? |
| |
If you cancel it with in one hour of registration, we will be able to cancel and refund partial domain registration fee after deducting cancellation charges and credit card processing charges if any. If you want to cancel the registered domain name after one hour of registration, it can not be cancelled since registries do not allow cancellations with a refund. If you no longer want your domain name, we suggest that you attempt to sell your domain name through a domain name broker or give your domain name to an interested party or leave it without renewing it. |
 |

| |
If your domain name is registered through with us, you can login to your account manager via the Domain Mangement link to modify the name server information for your domain name at any time. |
 |
How often is WHOIS information updated? |
| |

 |

What is a registrar transfer? |
| |
A registrar transfer is the act of moving a domain name from one domain name registrar to another. For example, you might move your domain name from your current registrar to our company to take advantage of wholesale domain registration and renewal fees, our technical support or domain services. A registrar transfer service is implemented by registries and made available to all domain registrars to promote competition and improved services to the broader Internet community. Please note that transferring your domain to our company will not affect the DNS information, contact eMail, or registrant name associated with your domain name. You may modify these areas after your domain name has been successfully transferred. Transfer and Renew your website now |

What is a domain name registrar? |
| |
A domain name registrar is the organization or company responsible for providing domain name registration services to the Internet community. An official domain name registrar is either authorized by ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, an organization dedicated to Internet governance) to provide registration services for the .com, .net and .org global top-level domain names, or is authorized by its respective government to register domain names within a specific ccTLD (country code Top Level Domain name extension). CIRA provides this function in Canada. A registrar must also be authorized by the registry of a Top Level Domain to act as an agent of the registry to process domain name registrations, where the agent is not a reseller. The registrar is also responsible for creating and maintaining a WHOIS database for its customers. |
 |
How do I transfer my domain name from my current registrar to yours? |
| |
All you need is a valid credit card and approval from the administrative and/or billing contacts for the domain name (on file with the current registrar). Use our automatic transfer to submit your transfer request online. Once your transfer request has been received, a confirmation eMail is sent to the administrative contacts to confirm the request to transfer the registrar to us.
If you do not have access to either the administrative or billing eMail addresses, please contact your current registrar for information on changing your eMail address before initiating a registrar transfer request. Please note, if only one of the contacts confirms the transfer request, it will still be processed. However, a five-day waiting period is given so the remaining contact can reply. This signals our system to send the transfer request to the registry immediately. The request will not be processed if either the administrative or billing contacts denies the transfer.
The next steps:
 |
Once the request has been confirmed, we process the transfer request by contacting the registry automatically |
 |
The registry then notifies your current registrar of the transfer request |
 |
The current registrar is given 5 days in which to grant or deny the transfer request |
 |
If no response is received within the 5-day period, the transfer request is granted |
 |
The transfer process takes five to 10 calendar days to be completed |
 |
Once your domain is successfully transferred, we send you notification by email |

What does REDEMPTIONPERIOD or PENDING DELETE RESTORABLE mean? |
| |
A domain with status: REDEMPTIONPERIOD (or PENDING DELETE RESTORABLE for .info domains) has expired and was not properly renewed for at least 40 days. Domains which are not renewed are deleted, after which point the Registry will hold the domain in the REDEMPTIONPERIOD/ PENDING DELETE RESTORABLE for 30 days.
Attempts would have been made to contact the Email addresses on the domain's registration record about the domain's expiration before it was actually expired. Having current, valid contact information is a requirement for all who register a domain name, as highlighted in the agreements when the domain was first registered. Renewal reminders and other important information are sent to these contacts, and having an invalid email address or aggressive SPAM filters in place will prevent delivery of these messages.
The Registry-imposed REDEMPTIONPERIOD/ PENDING DELETE RESTORABLE lasts for 30 days, and it is still possible to recover a domain in this state. The domain can only be redeemed by the original owner of the domain listed on the WHOIS prior to the deletion. If you are not the original listed owner of the domain, speak with your favorite Registration Company about how to determine when a REDEMPTIONPERIOD/ PENDING DELETE RESTORABLE domain will be available for registration again.
Redeeming a domain is more time consuming and complicated than if the domain was "renewed" normally during the first 40 days of expiration. Click here to Transfer and Renew your website now |
 |
What happens to domain names when they expire? |
| |
Expired domains will be held at the registry for a grace period defined by the registry. For .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .us, .name, and .cc the grace period is 40 days, for .ca it is 30 days, for .tv it is 55 days, for .cn it 10 days, for .uk domains are held until the 25th day of the month after they expire.
There are no grace periods for .de domains. They are deleted on the day after the expiration date. During the grace period all associated services will cease working until the name is renewed (if and when this happens). As well, name server/DNS changes will not be possible. If a renewal is not made by the end of the grace period the domains will sent to the registry for deletion and returned to the available pool. Deletion at the registry level can take 1 to 10 days.
Please note, .com, .net and .org registrations will enter into a "Redemption Period" state. .info registrations enter into a "Pending Delete Restorable" state. These domains will be held by the appropriate Registry for an additional 30 days. During the Redemption Period or Pending Delete Restorable state it is still possible to recover the domain name and have it renewed. Click here to Transfer and Renew your website now |

How can I transfer an Expired Domain? |

My domain is offline, but WHOIS says it expires next year. Why? |
| |
WHOIS can be a confusing tool to use when debugging expired domains as it requires some knowledge of how the global registration system ties together.
In general, when most types of domains (like COM, NET and ORG) expire the domain is temporarily renewed. This is temporary. This temporary renewal will be removed if the domain is not renewed or transferred, which will result in the domain going into a status known as the "REDEMPTIONPERIOD" or "Pending Delete- Restorable". It may also be deleted outright, depending on the type of domain.
With some types of domains, you can confirm that the domain is expired by taking note of the expiration month and day. If you have passed this date, and the domain is offline, it has expired.
Please note that it may take 24 hours for some types of domains to come online once they have been renewed, and WHOIS will unfortunately not indicate if it was renewed. |
